Guardian Angel

by Grandma

I know I have a guardian angel
when first I saw him I was four
suffering in pain and wishing myself dead
I put a pillow over my head
and during my nightly prayers asked God
Please don't make me wake up
I thought the angel was there to guide me
but I awoke disappointed
in that same hospital cot

A decade later as I lay in bed
I cried for another matter
the mental torment was much too great
I was far too young to deal with these things
things no child should have to face
my angel came to me
he said not a word just stood over my bed
again I awoke thinking nothing had changed

A decade later I died for the briefest of moments
the tunnel the light the understanding of deeds
no angel this time but a Saint
again I awoke in a hospital bed

I now see with the wisdom of age
that God can't change the path we're on
just guide us in the right direction
both times my guardian angel came to me
was to give me strength and courage to carry on
I've done well in walking my path
and grateful for the help I've had
but I like to think my angel's still near
and will help lead me when my time is near.
